buckingham palace visitors can picnic in the gardens this summer

Buckingham Palace will open its immaculate gardens to the public this summer, giving guests the chance to picnic and explore the Queen's official London residence with a self-guided tour.

From July to September, visitors will be free to wander through the glorious garden that encompasses the 156-metre Herbaceous Border. Here, there are plane trees planted by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, views of the glistening island lake, hives of buzzing bees, wildflower meadows, and the famous Rose Garden.

Despite its urban location, the garden is home to flora and fauna, including rare native plants, a rich biodiverse habitat, more than 1,000 trees, and the National Collection of Mulberry Trees. When you've finished exploring the beautiful space, make sure you head to the sweeping lawns for a delicious picnic.

Planning a visit? The Royal Collection Trust explain: "On weekends in April and May, garden enthusiasts can enjoy the tranquillity of the garden and discover its history and highlights by joining a guided tour. Visitors will experience the garden in springtime, with its meadows carpeted with primroses and bluebells, and flowering camellia, magnolia and azalea shrubs and trees."

As well as this, there will also be tours of Buckingham Palace from May to September. While the Palace has stayed closed due to the pandemic, this new tour will let visitors explore the magnificent State Rooms once again.

If you're unable to visit in person, there is lots you can enjoy from the comfort of your home. Led by expert guides and streamed live from Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, there will be a programme of live events revealing the history and stories of the palaces. Make sure not to miss out.
